Chartplotters, other software, and engines
Computer monitoring of engines, and related systems such as the
autopilot and rudder, is relatively new. The industry is exploring the
value of including such information in chartplotter track records, to
find such information as fuel consumption for a particular speed and
track. Other software, to remind captains of needed oil changes
and other maintenance, does exist, but often requires manual data entry.
Newer engines have computer monitoring features built in. Individual
captains will have their own opinion if this information should be
combined with the chartplotter, displayed by a separate computer
application, or kept separate from the chartplotter.
