US National Fisheries Management Service

Complements local and regional authorities

(Federal Regional Council)
(Interstate) Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC).
State: Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries

Has US government oversight of VMS

Type approval of specific VMS for specific fisheries decentralized to regions

Subsidizes VMS purchases

Tends to want self-contained systems so there are no excuses about other applications interfering

Does not subsidize installation or operating costs

Along with local authorities, may impose catch reporting

Regions are quite autonomous

New England Fisheries Management Council
Mid-Atlantic Regional Fisheries Management Council
South Atlantic Fishery Management Council
North Pacific Fishery Management Council
Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council '
Pacific Fishery Management Council
Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council
Caribbean Fishery Management Council
